Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is very important to our firm, as we thrive to do our best for our employees, clients and our community.

As a firm we have a collective responsibility to the wider community and the environment around us. The firm’s CSR programme uses the skills and expertise of our staff to support disadvantaged communities through provision of practical help and financial support to bring a positive change. The firm actively encourages its employees to get involved wherever possible.

We aim to have a positive impact by focussing on four key areas of CSR activity:

  • Increasing access to Justice
  • Supporting Opportunity
  • Charity Partnerships and Volunteering
  • Sustainable Business

Increasing access to Justice

City Legal offers legal advice on a pro-bono basis on selective cases based on available capacity and at the discretion of the advisors which confirm our firm’s ongoing commitment and determination to increase access to justice. Through our pro-bono work, we aim to help non-profit organisations and individuals who may not otherwise have access to legal services. Our team also volunteers as community advisor & offer pro-bono advice to support access to justice throughout the community.

Supporting Opportunity

Our team supports young people from diverse backgrounds to develop their skills and aspirations for the future, through education, employability and enterprise support, work experience and mentoring programmes. We also give career advice to students considering the law as a profession.

We focus on Harrow, North West London.

Our People
City Legal is committed to promoting principles of equality and diversity. We take pride in the diversity amongst our employees and benefit from wide ranging skill sets, knowledge and language abilities as well as cultural awareness.

We ensure that equal opportunities are offered to all employees by ensuring that all employees and job applicants receive equal access in relation to employment, terms and conditions, training, promotion and other benefits.

Our firm is an equal opportunities employer and treats people equally regardless of their racial group, colour, ethnic or national origin, nationality, religion or belief, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability or marital status.

Sustainable Business

We are fully committed to reducing the negative environmental impact of our business operations and the continual improvement in our environmental performance. We recognise that the firm’s environmental performance is the responsibility of everyone at the firm.

This is in addition to our compliance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice on environmental matters that are relevant to City Legal.

We continue to build on many aspects of our operational sustainability, such as:

Printing and Copying

The firm is committed to reducing its printing and copying. We have replaced all printers and copiers by multi functional devices increasing the firm's ability to operate a “less paper” digital document management system. Printing has been defaulted to double-sided printing to reduce paper use. Printer and copier use is regularly reviewed and operational working practices are regularly reviewed with the aim of significantly reducing the need to print or copy. All devices use less power than their predecessors and are set to save power when not in use. All toner cartridges are sent for recycling.

Heating and Boiler Usage

The times when our boilers operate have been reduced with an average 20% reduction in energy consumption and new energy efficient controls have been put in place which enables features like Geo Location to save energy when the office areas are not staffed.

IT Strategy

The firm is committed towards the implementation of IT systems and processes that reduce environmental impact. We continue to invest in Document Management systems and processes and aims to become fully digital by 2022. Our Hosting provider's data centres operated by Google match 100% the energy consumed with renewable energy.

The firm has introduced PIR lighting wherever practicable to reduce the length of time lights are on when not required. Staff are encouraged by means of turning off lights when they are not in the office.

Charity Partnerships and Volunteering

Our team is encouraged to get involved in supporting their community, whether it is on an individual basis or as part of a larger team and usually takes part in at least one charity event a year.

These are some of the organisations that we work with:

IGNITE works with young people aged 11-25 and helps them to re-engage with education, find employment or move away from anti-social behaviour, gang involvement and exploitative relationships. We believe in the power of community and we like what IGNITE does to build communities of change around young peoples’ interests and needs.
FirmFoundation is a registered charity which helps relieve the immediate suffering of the homeless, while working with them to find a practical and sustainable solution to their needs. The charity offers support to establish benefits, appropriate services, access to a GP and help finding accommodation. Homelessness and Rough Sleeping is a major issue in our community and we would like to support the Firm Foundation who is actively fighting this cause all year round.
Cancer Research UK is a cancer research and awareness charity that aims to reduce the number of deaths from cancer. It is the world's largest independent cancer research charity and actively conducts research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. We support the cause and hope the charity achieves its ambition of 3 in 4 People surviving Cancer by 2034.
